Increasing numbers of Kilkenny families are eschewing turkey in favour of goose as their bird of choice on the table this Christmas.

Christmas is a time for family, for friends, for spirituality and for reflection. But for many it is a challenging time when that very reflection leads many people to think about the year just gone, lost loved ones and financial pressures that the season invariably brings.

A large number of members from Mayo AC are getting ready to take on the challenge of the 2011 Dublin Marathon on Monday morning. Almost half of those who are taking part have come into running through the Mayo Fit4Life scheme in Claremorris, Ballinrobe and Castlebar. The women’s senior team consists of Ann McDonnell, Maggie Heneghan, Kathy Connolly, Patricia Gallagher, Paula Prendergast and Yvonne Byrne. The women’s o-40 team is made up of Gwen Daly, Anne Fahy Ronayne, Pauline Joyce, Mary Walsh, Chris Gallagher and Mary Murphy. The senior men’s team is Damien Glacken, Brendan Harrison, Gerry Corley and John Byrne, while the o-50 side consists of Brian Cusack, John Timothy, Jimmy Feeney, Billy Gallagher, Owen Mongan, Chris O’Connell and Tom Hunt.

To mark World Mental Health Week (9-15 October) in Kilkenny this year, representatives from a number of voluntary organisations will join with the HSE’s Kilkenny Mental Health Services to host a local open day at MacDonagh Junction on Friday October 14 from 12-8pm.

EIGHT GIFTED Galway dance students, members of Corrib Dance Academy and Youth Ballet West, have recently secured placements on elite courses at prestigious schools in the UK and mainland Europe. The eight dancers are Stephanie Dufresne, Mary Walsh, Elspeth McKeever, Rebecca Lee, Caitlin Langan, Jessica Nolan, Brigitte O’Reilly and Gemma Brook. To have so many dancers from the region progressing to these blue-chip establishments is a truly remarkable achievement, as Youth Ballet West director Judith Sibley explains; “Normally each year there would be four young dancers from all of Ireland going away to these top vocational colleges, so to have eight going from Galway city is phenomenal. And these are hugely competitive courses, one school I spoke to had 4,000 people apply for just 25 places.”

It was revealed yesterday (Thursday) that the so called Corrib ‘rape tape’ was tampered with and as a result the five gardaí at the centre of an investigation will not face criminal charges.

People often shake their heads when they hear you are about to run a marathon. Mayo AC's John Byrne is well used to dedicated preparation. He has been their most successful athlete over many years now at a range of distances from 5k upwards. He has completed 24 marathons and a 50k. Over the past year John has moved on to new goals. Given the number of training miles he runs it seemed a natural step-up that he would progress 'beyond the marathon', or that zone defined as ultra distance running. The 100k is the equivalent of running two marathons plus ten miles - 62.5 miles in total. Start out in Ballaghaderreen, run along the N5 to Bohola, take a diversion down to John's homeplace in Straide, then back onto N5 at Ballyvary, through Castlebar and Westport, then on to the R335 until you hit Louisburgh - you will still have 3k to run to complete 100k!
